About The Empire

The Empire, which is widely recognized as the most valuable asset on the Darling Downs, encompasses the biggest performing arts area in regional Australia. It is home to various performance and function spaces, both old and new, that have been officially recognized for their historical significance. Our vibrant precinct, known for its stunning art deco design, serves as the heart of culture and entertainment for the local community.

For over a century, the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba has been a vital centre for entertainment in the region. Originally constructed in 1911 as ‘Empire Pictures’, it underwent a reconstruction in 1933 after a fire, adopting an Art Deco style. After being restored and reopened in 1997, the theatre has played a significant role in the area’s cultural development. As a heritage-listed building, it boasts a remarkable history and exquisite architecture, such as the magnificent proscenium arch, ornamental sconces, and the original brick walls in the foyers. Additionally, the theatre features art-deco-style lighting and can accommodate up to 1565 audience members with its modern seating. Both performers and patrons continue to lavish the theatre with numerous accolades.

What to do at The Empire

The Empire Theatre precinct has expanded and evolved since the official reopening of the main theatre. Three additional venues, namely the Empire Theatre Studio, Empire Church Theatre, and the Armitage Centre, have been included in the precinct. The Empire Theatre Studio, situated behind the main stage, is frequently utilized for intimate performances with a maximum audience capacity of 120. This venue complements the historic Empire Church Theatre, which was constructed in 1877 and now showcases a diverse range of performances such as cabaret, comedy, fine music, and jazz. Furthermore, the Empire Church Theatre is a highly sought-after location for weddings, receptions, and private functions.

The Armitage Centre, a one-of-a-kind performance space and function venue, has recently been added to the Empire Theatre precinct. Equipped with top-notch facilities such as advanced technical equipment, retractable tiered seating, and a charming forecourt, the centre can accommodate up to 350 people. Additionally, it boasts an impressive foyer and bar spaces. Since its inauguration in September 2014, the Armitage Centre has successfully hosted a wide range of performances spanning film, drama, music, and dance. Moreover, it can effortlessly adapt to accommodate various events like weddings, cocktail parties, business functions, and dinner receptions.
