The Scented Gardens, which are a special addition to the park, were designed based on suggestions from the Downs Association of the Blind. In 1932, the land for Laurel Bank Park was generously donated by Samuel George Stephens, the Managing Director of the Darling Downs Building Society. The interest in scientific understanding of the natural world led to the establishment of botanic gardens worldwide, including Brisbane in 1855. In central Toowoomba, Rangeville, and East Toowoomba, St Luke’s Anglican Parish provides for the heart of the community with three worship centres. Our Christian community, which is a part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, the Anglican Church of Australia, and the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, seeks to share the love of God as experienced in Jesus Christ. Additionally, we aim to grow together to live with integrity, compassion, faithfulness, and love.

Currently in a vacancy and actively seeking a new vicar, St Luke’s is a parish church affiliated with the Church of England. It is a place where individuals can freely express their faith, or even lack thereof, without judgment. We aim to create a community that embraces and welcomes everyone, irrespective of their ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, disability, personal history, or religious convictions.

What to do at Saint Luke’s Church

At St Luke’s, we offer a variety of services and prayers. Our Holy Communion service takes place at 9.15 am on the first Sunday of the month, providing a brief spoken eucharist experience. For our main Family Service, join us every Sunday at 11 am. Additionally, on the first Sunday of the month, we host a Celtic prayer service, influenced by The Iona Community – Wild Goose Resource Group, Wee Worship Book Fifth Incarnation. It is important to note that this service does not include communion. Throughout the weekdays, we invite you to join us on Zoom for morning prayers, where we share a liturgy from the Iona Community. On the fifth Sunday of the month, we have Choral Evensong at 7 pm, a captivating candlelit Anglican cathedral-style service featuring the St Luke’s Choir. We also have a Soul Food group specifically for individuals aged 21-35, who meet every other Monday from 7-9 pm. Lastly, on the First Sunday of the month, members of our choir and congregation, led by our music director, Justin Butcher, sing at the 9.30 am chapel service at HMP Pentonville. In 1958, the stone wall and gates were constructed to commemorate the centenary of the Wellington Diocese. As part of this memorial, three trees were planted: a kauri tree for Bishop Abraham, the first Bishop of Wellington, a puriri tree for Bishop Wallis, and a totara tree for Bishop Hadfield. The church underwent significant expansion in both 1977 and 1985, incorporating elements of the original structure, such as the bell tower. Within the sanctuary, some windows depict Wiremu Parata and Octavius Hadfield. Wiremu Parata rests with his family on the north side of the church.
